Workshop 2: Study of structural and foundation systems of Wind Turbines
27/9/2021-2/10/2021

The diversity of the subsoil from rock to soft ground (seabed) requires a variety of methods for the WT’s foundation and tower construction in order to make the installation environmentally friendly (drilling, ramming, shaking), to confine the noise emissions (underground and airbone noise) and to provide the lightning protection of the wind turbines. On the other hand installation and construction of WTs in Greece differs from that in Germany due to different Greek geomorphological soil conditions characterized by steeper slopes on land and water with foundations on predominantly soft rock or stiff soils and foundations in the offshore area lie in deeper water than the depths of the North German Bay or the Baltic Sea. Effects of soil structure interaction due to cyclic loading on foundations for offshore wind turbines is a serious problem for the installation of WTs, while the use of a foundation on floating platforms requires a careful study of utilized anchoring which, in the seabed is exposed to a cyclical load of wind and waves, as well as an underwater current.
The present workshop deals with methods and simulations that solve engineering problems faced in the installation of wind turbines. Lectures on the investigations of soil behavior using triaxial testing techniques, cyclic Loading of soils and simulation of accumulation Phenomena, numerical simulations of high cycle fatigue Loading on welded or bolded joints, acoustic and seismic measurements of low frequency emissions of onshore wind turbines, simplified approaches for the estimation of the dynamic foundation-subsoil interaction of a wind turbine, advanced nonlinear structural analysis and design principles for floating platforms will be presented and discussed by experts teaching in Greece and Germany.
The workshop will be held place in the Engineering School of the University of Patras from 27/9/2021 to 2/10/2021.
